Marshallers in Athens - ATH

In other countries, unlike Spain, not always there is a company that manages all the airports in the country, so we will talk about cities and airports instead of countries, and we start at the Athens Airport in Greece.

Athens International Airport S.A. (AIA) "Eleftherios Venizelos" (
Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος) operates as a Private-Public Partnership (assigned by the Airport Authority) responsible for managing the airport for a period of 30 years, and which will last until 2026, which employs up to 16,000 people to serve around 14 million passengers a year.

This is a 24 hour airport, companies base Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air. It has two terminals (Main, for Schengen flights mostly, and Satellite only for non-Schengen flights) and 2 Runways of 4 km long, that the European Aviation Safety Agency and the Federal Aviation Administration have approved to operate the largest passenger plane in the world to date, the A380.

In ATH airport the aircraft guidance and the aircraft marshalling are two different functions, so that AIA is responsible for guiding the aircraft (Follow me car), however the marshalling procedures in the stand are performed by handling agents (Olympic , Goldair and Swissport).

With respect to AIA, the AMIU: Airside Monitoring and Inspections Unit, a part of guiding aircraft, chiefly in charge of:
  • Routine and non-routine inspections of the movement area and maneuvering area
  • Response in the Airport Emergency Plan
  • Runway friction measurement
  • FOD Prevention and Control
  • Wildlife control
  • Operations during adverse weather conditions (low visibility, strong winds, Winter operations, etc.).
  • Review of stands before and after use by aircrafts.
  • Grass area inspections
  • Monitoring and controlling of the airside works
  • Monitoring of the spillage removal process
To work in AIA should not make an opposition, but must pass a selection process.

AIA is proud of its staff (human capital) who claims to be the most important component for the efficient operation of the airport. Aware of this, invest in training their workers developing a safe and pleasant environment, encouraging creativity and personal development. They have created the AIA Training Center for the development of their staff with courses, training programs, seminars, etc.
